Distinctions for the UVT Faculty of Law team at prestigious international competitions

"TELDERS International Law Moot Court Competition"

Between June 7 and 12, 2021, the international round of the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, the most prestigious student competition in Europe on topics of public international law, organized by Leiden University (Netherlands), took place in virtual format. In the international stage, 32 teams competed, including the one from the Faculty of Law of the Western University of Timișoara.

The competition consisted of a simulation of the proceedings before the International Court of Justice, in which the participating teams presented the arguments of the parties in a case concerning jurisdictional immunities, environmental protection and foreign investment protection.

UVT Rector, Prof. Univ. Dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea: „As usual, the participation of the student team from the Faculty of Law of UVT in international competitions on topics of applied legal sciences bring significant results for students, mentors and for the institution as a whole. I congratulate the competitors who represented UVT in the competition organized by Leiden University (Netherlands)."

The Timișoara Faculty of Law team, composed of students Sara Onofrei, Daniel Sporea, Tania Velcsov (XNUMXnd year) and Mihai Șevciuc (XNUMXrd year), won first place in the ranking of oral pleadings for applicants (Best Oral Argumentation on behalf of the Applicant) and XNUMXth place in the consolidated ranking of claimants.

The preparation of the Timișoara Faculty of Law team was coordinated by Mrs. lect. university Dr. Sorina Doroga and Miss Dr. Alexandra Bordulea.

European Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Between 17 and 21 May 2021, the final international rounds of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition took place, a prestigious student human rights competition, in its 9th edition, organized by ELSA International in cooperation with the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Human Rights Association. Teams from 81 European universities entered the competition, 68 of which were declared eligible for the regional rounds.

UVT Rector, Prof. Univ. Dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea: „I congratulate with great joy the students of the UVT Faculty of Law team, as well as their teachers, for the first-line result obtained in this European competition of legal sciences, the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition, a very important component of internationalization and the global affirmation of UVT in the space of performance education."

In the final stage of the competition, 18 teams qualified, including the one from the Faculty of Law of the Western University of Timișoara. Access to this stage was based on the written memoranda prepared by the participants and the results obtained by them in the simulated processes in the regional rounds. The competition consisted of a simulation of the proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights, in which the participating teams present the arguments of the parties to a case concerning the right to respect for private life, freedom of assembly, the right to a fair trial and the right to an effective remedy , in a state that, in the context of an epidemic, derogated from the obligations provided for in the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Timișoara Faculty of Law team, made up of Lorena Lazea, Iulia Ungureanu, Raluca Țigla and Slaven Nichici (third-year students), qualified for the semi-finals and took fourth place in the overall ranking of the competition, and the team's training was coordinated by Mrs. Prof. Univ. Dr. Raluca Bercea and Mrs. lect. university Dr. Sorina Doroga.
