The Faculty of Sociology and Psychology within the UVT organized a different course: "In search of dignity" - supported by the well-known sociologist Gelu Duminică, together with the famous taraf led by Marian Bătănași (Mexicanu).
The event began by providing a historical perspective of Roma cultural identity, starting from the period of slavery, deportation and liberation, until today. In addition to this review of history, other topics of major interest were brought up.
A special topic addressed was the role of Roma music in Romanian society. The way in which Roma music influenced and was influenced by Romanian culture was debated. The prejudices inherited over generations regarding this ethnicity and how they impact the Roma community were also discussed.
The event was enlivened by fiddle music, played in this open class in a variety of old and new styles. Through a comparative analysis, the audience was able to enjoy not only the musical experience, but also to understand how music influences and connects the community, which is directly proportional to the "language" in which it is sung and the artist who interprets it. The ultimate purpose of music is none other than to overcome intercultural barriers and prejudices. Music serves as a means of promoting cultural harmony and coexistence between individuals, regardless of their cultural background. The power of music lies in its ability to overcome language barriers and facilitate authentic connections between people from diverse cultures. In the end, the students celebrated this diversity and this intercultural harmony with a chorus, a choreography that comes to life right in the Aula Magna of the Western University in Timișoara.
