Pianist Andrei Vieru and mathematician Sergiu Klainerman, in dialogue at UVT

We invite you to two exceptional events, held under the auspices of "At UVT, Culture is the Capital!".

Wednesday, June 22, starting at 18:30 p.m, Andrei Vieru, one of Romania's most important pianists, will delight us with a special piano concert, organized in the Aula Magna of the Western University in Timișoara.

Thursday, June 23, starting at 18:00 p.m, Sergiu Klainerman, an elite mathematician, will dialogue with the musician Andrei Vieru around a very special theme: "The totalitarian temptations of the world we live in". The discussion will be moderated by the professor and literary critic Mircea Mihăieș and will take place in the A01 amphitheater of the Western University of Timișoara.

Andrei Vieru was born into a family of musicians: his father was the composer Anatol Vieru, and his mother is a musicologist. After graduating from the Bucharest Conservatory, he attended courses with Carlo Zecchi in Salzburg and Lev Naoumov in Moscow. He is also one of the brilliant students of pianist Dan Grigore. He is present on many international stages, in Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Canada. In Timișoara he will perform:

  • JS Bach Partita No. 6 in E minor BWV 830
  • JS Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue BWV 903
  • Franz Schubert 6 musical moments

Sergiu Klainerman is an American mathematician of Romanian origin known for his contributions to the study of hyperbolic differential equations and general relativity. He currently holds the Eugene Higgins Chair in Mathematics at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1987. From 1980 to 1987, he was on the faculty of New York University.

About the event, the rector of the West University of Timișoara, Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, said: Reflection, music, sciences can be part of a special dialogue, which stands under the sign of high culture. This week, two outstanding personalities will come to the Western University of Timișoara: Andrei Vieru and Sergiu Klainerman. If in the first evening we will enjoy a special concert, performed by Andrei Vieru, in the second we will participate in a truly interdisciplinary dialogue, in which two brilliant minds, with training that brings together various fields, from music in mathematics, they will dialogue around a topic as challenging as possible. We are waiting for the people of Timisoara to join us and we are convinced that they will have a really special experience, because at UVT, Culture is the Capital!

The event will also be broadcast live on the UVT Facebook page.

The conference series "At UVT, Culture is Capital" is part of the Timișoara 2023 Cultural Program - European Capital of Culture, its main financier is the Municipality of Timișoara through the Project Center and it is co-financed by the Timiș County Council.
