The Western University of Timișoara recently signed the Magna Charta Universitatum - MCU 2020, thus confirming its commitment to the promotion of academic autonomy, social responsibility and university values, thus becoming a member of a community dedicated to the continuous development of higher education.
Magna Charta Universitatum is the document that brings together the fundamental principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy and was signed for the first time in 1988 by 388 universities around the world, on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the founding institution: the University from Bologna.
Initially, the MCU's objective was to guide universities in a process of good governance. Since then, universities and academic environments have changed greatly. In the context of these changes, a multinational group was formed to revise the Magna Charta Universitatum, and the result of this collective effort was an updated version of the MCU, which was adopted by the Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) in July of the year 2020.
This new document recognizes the global nature of the activities carried out by universities and the variety of responsibilities they have within the local communities of which they are a part. Currently, almost 1000 universities in 94 countries have signed up to one of the two versions of the MCU.
