UVT supports performance in physics and promotes the field in national and international competitions

International Young Physicists' Tournament, IYPT (International Young Physicists' Tournament) is one of the most respected and prestigious international physics competitions for high school students. It is, moreover, the only physics competition directly supported by the European Physical Society - EPS (European Physics Society). Every year, thousands of high school students from all over the world participate in this competition, which has been held continuously since 1988 in the form of a team tournament. The purpose of the IYPT competition is to promote physics among high school students by developing teamwork skills, solving experimental problems with open solutions, the ability to develop and present the results obtained, and the ability to discuss and critically look at the work the other competitors. A creative approach to solving seemingly simple problems, but requiring a deep understanding of physical phenomena, shapes the future leaders of scientific, technological and economic development.

Starting from 2013, Romania also joined this competition and since then UVT, through the Faculty of Physics, has ensured all the conditions for the preparation of the national team of Romania, by making available to the teams coordinated by Professor Sandu Golcea both the necessary spaces for training and accommodation, but also of the specialists who worked with the team members to prepare for the competitions. Among the students who formed the Romanian batches in recent years, some continued their studies in Romania and others chose to study in England (Imperial College of London; Oxford; Cambridge; Durham) and in the USA (Stanford; Princeton; Boston).

In the context of the active involvement of the Romanian representatives in the IYPT structures and the support offered by UVT, it was possible to obtain the organization of this competition in 2022 in Timișoara. Organized by the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Timiș County School Inspectorate and UVT, the competition brought to Timișoara representatives from 25 countries, from all over the world (South Africa, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Great Britain, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Sweden, Taipei China, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary).
