"We Unite Them - Their Future is Our Future" - social support project for students in the county

The Western University of Timișoara, through the faculties of Arts and Design, Physical Education and Sports, Letters, History and Theology, Music and Theater and Sociology and Psychology, together with the Department for Relations with the Pre-University Environment, in partnership with the Timiş County School Inspectorate, announces project opening"We Unight Them - Their Future is Our Future!". It aims to support students from schools and high schools in the rural and urban areas of Timiș County, involving them in cultural and artistic activities, raising awareness and recovery from the effects of socio-psychological impact, caused by the current pandemic context. Also, the project aims to develop the social, emotional, interaction and social support skills of students who feel the effects of the long restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

According to the studies carried out in 2020 by the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, the National Council of Students, the UNICEF Representation in Romania, as well as the Save the Children Romania Organization, over 900 thousand students were directly influenced by the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The forced digitization of the educational environment, caused by the imposed quarantine measures, has made most students learn without a well-structured program and socialize predominantly in the online environment.

The long limitation to the space of one's own house, the lack of human contact, of support groups (friends, relatives, sports teams, etc.) made that:

  • 23.2% of students to feel angry,
  • 32.7% of students feel tired,
  • and 27.1% of students to feel scared and sad.

The chronicling of these feelings is reflected in the large number of students who suffer from "zoom-burnout" and depression (at least 1 in 7 children, according to UNICEF) and, by extension, in poor academic results, school dropout and loss of interest in learning. develop.

The project, which will start this week through activities supported by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports and the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology, proposes the involvement of civil society in supporting the current young generation.

Information and data about the modules programmed within the project are available at the Department for Relations with the Pre-University Environment of UVT, Lecturer. university Dr. Romanita Jumanca (romanita.jumanca@e-uvt.ro).
