According to the results of the January 2020 edition, UVT ranks 5th out of the 101 ranked higher education institutions in Romania. At the European level, it is on the 551st place, and at the world level it occupies the 1485th position, and according to the results of the July 2020 edition, UVT is placed on the 4th place out of the 102 ranked higher education institutions in Romania. At the European level, it is on the 548th place, and at the world level it occupies the 1401st position.

Webometrics is based on data from reliable open sources and is based on the following 4 indicators (http://www.webometrics.info/en/current_edition): 1. Presence (Public knowledge shared – 5%) – According to the Google search engine, the number of pages of the institution's main web domain is evaluated. It includes all subdomains that distribute the main web domain; 2. Visibility (Web contents Impact – 50%) – The number of external networks (subnets) connecting to the institution's web pages (sources: Ahrefs & Majestic); 3. Openness (Transparency – Top cited researchers – 10%) – Number of citations by top authors (top 210 authors). The information from Google Scholar Profiles is used (raw data are available in the Transparent Ranking section: http://www.webometrics.info/en/transparent); 4. Excellence (Scholar – Top cited papers – 35%) – The data are collected from Scimago and represent the top 10% most cited papers in the reference fields in the last 5 years, prior to the evaluation.

The Webometrics ranking is published twice a year (data is collected in the first weeks of January and July to be public at the end of these months) and covers more than 28.000 higher education institutions worldwide. The ranking aims to motivate both institutions and researchers to have a web presence that accurately reflects their activities. If the web performance of an institution is lower than the expected position, according to the level of academic excellence, the management team of that institution should reconsider the web policy, free access to information and transparency and promote the substantial increase of the volume and quality of its electronic publications.

Established in 2004 by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) from Spain, Webometrics is a classification system for universities around the world based on indicators that take into account both the volume of web content (number of web pages and files), as well as the visibility and impact of these web publications depending on the number of external inlinks (site citations).
