Today, at the Western University of Timișoara, the opening of the new season took place Jr. NBA League Romania – The Western Conference, a competition dedicated to primary school students, included in the Jr NBA League Romania 2023 calendar. In this event, the names of the NBA teams that will be assigned to the 15 schools in the Western Conference were determined. The 15 schools are grouped into three divisions of the Western Conference, named similarly to the well-known North American NBA competition: Northwest, Pacific and Southwest.
The event was attended by several international representatives of the NBA competition, together with organizers and local partners: Nikoloz Tskitisvili (NBA Ambassador), Alvarez Leo Adrian (Jr. NBA league), Nicoleta Wilms (Winsedswiss – official partner Jr. Nba League), Carmen Tocală (president of FRB), Amalia Marchiș (president of AJB Cluj), Alin Faur (president of AJB Timiș), Cosmin Hogea (deputy general school inspector, Timiș School Inspectorate), Sorin Șipos (SCM Timișoara), Mădălin Bunoiu (provost UVT), Marin Popescu (DRMP UVT director) and Dragan Petricevic (Western Conference Jr. Nba League coordinator).
UVT Rector, Marilen Pirtea: We are happy that the new season of the Western Conference Jr. NBA League debuts today at the Western University of Timișoara. The Jr. NBA League competition takes a valuable North American experience and brings it to the basketball courts of Romanian schools, for primary school students. This program provides a fun environment for kids where they learn the fundamentals and values of the game of basketball. Sportsmanship and the harmonious development of children are essential for their entire future educational journey, they are primary values promoted through this basketball competition, which UVT enthusiastically supports.
The format of the competition foresees the registration of 30 teams in the two conferences (East – Cluj-Napoca and West – Timișoara), with 15 teams in each conference, grouped into 3 divisions per conference (with 5 teams in each division). The regular season calls for each team to play the other four inter-division teams at least twice (round-robin), meaning each team plays at least 8 games. Then, depending on the results, the teams participate in the Play-Offs of the Eastern Conference (Cluj-Napoca) and the Western Conference (Timișoara), after which, the first 8 teams from each conference, with the best win-loss score , will advance to the Jr. NBA League Romania finals.
The third edition of the Jr. NBA League Romania was preceded, in the first two editions, by a series of appreciated sports meetings, in which approximately 425 students benefited from an organized framework, which is based on the principle that sports help children to be more sociable, it attracts them to work easily together with others and to understand what fair play means. In the world, the Jr. NBA League competition is held in 22 countries, 60 cities, training 1050 teams, 15750 students, 2100 coaches, who play 8400 games in the regular season.
