The Western University of Timişoara is the best-ranked university in western Romania in the academic QS University Ranking 2021, occupying the 6th place in the top of the 19 ranked universities in Romania and the 95th place in the top 400 universities in Europe and Asia Central. In the 2021 edition, UVT is among the top 24% of universities listed in the QS EECA.

In order to achieve the ranking for the year 2021, more than 102.500 responses from members of the international academic community were analyzed regarding the best higher education institutions in the research area and more than 52.000 responses from employers in the world regarding those better university graduates. To obtain this information, the 2 annual QS studies were used: Global Academic Survey and Global Employer Survey. Also, the results obtained by institutions through scientific research activity (2014-2018 period for publications and 2014-2019 period for citations) were evaluated using bibliometric data from Scopus. Only the institutions that generated more than 150 scientific papers in the last five years were evaluated.
The rector of UVT, prof. univ. dr. Marilen Pirtea, says about the new positioning of the West University of Timișoara in this international academic ranking: "The Western University of Timișoara is in the elite university of the Eastern Europe region, but also in the first place in the academic top of the Western area of Romania, according to this new academic classification result QS University Ranking EECA 2021. The result indicates our performances in the ten groups of measured indicators: academic reputation, UVT's reputation among employers, the evolution of the student/faculty ratio, the evolution of the scientific works/faculty ratio, the impact of the web, the proportion of teaching staff with PhDs, the evolution of the citations/works ratio, teaching staff from abroad, students from abroad and the international research network. It is a complex set of factors that reflect the trend of internationalization that UVT manifests through its strategic approach, and the result we are recording can only motivate us, once more, for new ambitious goals in the coming years".
Along with the Western University of Timişoara, there are also present in this regional classification, dedicated to the developing countries of Europe and Central Asia, the universities of the University Consortium: University of Bucharest, Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi and the Academy of Economic Studies from Bucharest.
