History

early
The establishment of the Western University of Timișoara was a complex and long process. It was done in stages, in a domestic and international political, social and economic context marked by the Second World War and the territorial resettlement caused by the loss of Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina and Herța Land (in the north) as well as the Quadrilateral ( in South).

The year 1940 brings major changes in Timisoara's academic life. After the Vienna Dictatorship, the Faculty of Agronomy, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, natural sciences sections) took refuge in Timișoara from Cluj, which was ceded to Hungary. Although the war years followed, with multiple material difficulties, high-quality university and scientific research activity is developing in Timișoara. The ideas of Sever Bocu, who insists on the national cultural significance of the foundation of a University in Timișoara, are more current than ever.
1943
encouraged by the public demonstrations, the intellectual elite from the west of Romania addresses a "Memorial" to the Government on the need to establish a University in Timișoara.

Establishment of UVT
1944
It is the year when a rather arduous process was completed through which the Banat intellectuals in general and the Timișoara intellectuals in particular had argued the need for the establishment of a humanistic university of Banat, a "workshop for the processing of the national soul", as Sever Bocu imagined it.

Thus, by Royal Decree-Law 660/December 30, the establishment of a Timisoara university - the University of the West - was announced, authorized to offer study programs in the fields of Law, Letters and Philosophy, Sciences, Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Theology.

The education reform established the fundamental principles for the organization of higher education in Romania, according to the Soviet model. With all its limits, it has some good consequences for university education in Timișoara, in relation to the structure, also providing for the establishment of the 3-year Pedagogical Institute, which paved the way for the creation of the University.

By Decision no. 263327, the Pedagogical Institute was founded, an institution that operated in parallel with other higher education centers in the city (Polytechnic Institute, Medical Institute, Agronomic Institute). The purpose of the new institute was to train teaching staff for Romanian education in the west of the country. In its early years, the Pedagogical Institute housed only one faculty, Mathematics-Physics, with a three-year study period.

The courses of the Pedagogical Institute began, in a modest space, with 82 students. But the director of the institution, Mihail Ghermanescu, had the ambition to develop it, turning it into a powerful university.

In the absence of numerous endowments, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics began its activity, in an edifice little adapted to university needs. But the director of the Institute, Mihail Ghermanescu, had the ambition to develop it, turning it into a powerful university. Following the repeated efforts of Prof. Ghermănescu, a particularly significant fact resulted: the Pedagogical Institute was considered part of the Western University.

Faculty of Philology
1956
The Faculty of Philology is established, with a duration of studies of 5 years. A new group of young teachers with great potential arrive in the capital of Banat, submitting a memorandum to the ministry, requesting its transformation into a university, the separation of departments into distinct faculties and the elaboration of a diploma thesis by the graduates.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences is established, intended to give the university an additional direction, by opening it to the labor market.

Steps were taken to establish the International Marketing-Management Center within the University. It was the follow-up to the proposals initiated by the Faculty of Economic Sciences and aimed at a real opening of the University to the academic world and Western economic research centers. The Marketing Center was established with the financial support of the European Drăgan Foundation and operated with a small number of employees.
1976
The staff of the Faculty of Economic Sciences request the Ministry of National Education, through the University Rectorate, to establish the Foreign Trade Section. The proposal was not accepted by the central authorities.
1981-82
For the academic year 1981/1982, three specializations (English, French, Russian) from the Faculty of Philology did not receive tuition, as a result of which the humanistic profile of the University of Timișoara was almost non-existent.

In 1981, the necessity of the existence of a specialization in history was invoked, which would allow the training of specialists for the research of national history and which would allow a thorough training of teachers for pre-university education.

It was post-communist
1989
The university enters the post-communist era with only three faculties: the Faculty of Philology, the Faculty of Natural Sciences (i.e. Mathematics and Physics) and the Faculty of Economic Sciences. The humanist profile, on which the entire concept of the Western University imagined by the interwar Timișoara intelligentsia was based, becomes almost non-existent.

The period immediately following December 1989 brings substantial changes in the structure of the entire Romanian higher education and, of course, also in the structure of our university.
It was post-communist
1990
The reorganization of the University and its establishment on a democratic basis, put before the new managements of the Faculties and the University problems of particular importance. Tensions, disturbances and efforts to change also took place at the level of the University of Timișoara. Since the first days following the removal of the totalitarian regime, the teaching staff dismisses the last leadership established by the communist party and replaces the Rector appointed in October 1989. The eminent scientist, Prof. Dr. Eugen Todoran, is reinstated.

The academic year 1990/1991 opens in a modified framework, with new specializations and faculties: Fine Arts and Design, Physical Education and Sport, Chemistry, Geography, Biology, Psychology and Sociology, Law, Music and Theater Art, the duration of the schooling being established at 5 years.
1994
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the University of the West by Decree-Law no. 600/1944, the Ministry of Education, at the request of the teaching staff, decides that the name of the institution should be the West University of Timișoara.

At the end of the academic year 1995/1996, the Western University of Timișoara had eight Faculties, a Department for the Improvement of Teaching Staff, 40 long-term specializations, one short-term specialization (3 years, Computer Technology), 12 Master's specializations and Studies in-depth, a program of Higher European Studies.
The 2000s
The 2000s were one of the most dynamic periods in the University's history, characterized by a very large number of students, constant concerns about improving the infrastructure, by building new buildings.

2004 – the youngest of the faculties, the Faculty of Political Sciences, Philosophy and Communication Sciences, is established.
