Honorary Doctorate

He studied physics at the University of Heidelberg (1981-1987). He obtained the title of doctor in physics at the same university in 1990, with the work "Representation of transparent microstructures in the confocal microscope". He devoted his entire scientific career to improving the resolution of optical microscopy beyond the limits reached up to that point in science, thus laying the foundations of 4Pi microscopy, an improved variant of fluorescence microscopy.
