Romanian immigration in British newspaper discourse: Invited lecture in France

On November 25, 2022, Mrs. Conf. univ. Dr. Irina Diana Mădroane, from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology at the Western University of Timișoara, was invited to give a lecture in the webinar organized by the international network of English researchers, MIDIB (Migration & Diversité dans les Îles Britanniques & Irlandaises/ Migration & Diversity in the British & Irish Isles), led by specialists from the "Jean Jaurès" University of Toulouse and the Sorbonne-Nouvelle University (https://midib.hypotheses.org/).

The interdisciplinary panel, entitled "Romanian Immigration in Great Britain", also invited Dr. Arkadiusz Wiśnioski, expert in economics and social statistics at the University of Manchester, who presented a new method for estimating migratory flows, illustrated with a study case study about Romanian immigration to Great Britain. The lecture of Ms. Univ. Conf. Dr. Irina Diana Mădroane presented a summary of her research on the representations of Romanian immigration in conservative British newspapers, which are at the basis of public claims related to the imposition and maintenance of restrictions on the labor market for Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants, and subsequently Brexit .

These representations generated a vocabulary and public imaginary about the issue of Central and Eastern European immigration to Britain, used by journalists during the debate for the referendum on the country's exit from the European Union. The lecture extensively discussed the arguments about Romanian immigration and the rhetoric of British conservative newspapers during the debate, explaining the discursive strategies used to mobilize British citizens with anti-immigration sentiments to support Brexit. The questions and discussions held in the panel focused on aspects such as the reaction of the media and politicians in Romania, the new post-Brexit dynamics, such as the withdrawal of borders, and the difficulties related to the estimations of migratory flows.
