Environmental pollution monitoring in the New Moldova area

At the beginning of February, the youngest members of the implementation team of the RoS-Net2 project - "Monitoring network Romania - Serbia for the assessment and dissemination of the impact of copper mining activities on water quality in the cross-border area" participated in a collection campaign of water, sediment and soil samples in order to monitor pollution in the New Moldova area. Measurements were taken , for the determination of some physico-chemical parameters and, as provided by the work protocols established within the project, for the determination of the concentration of heavy metals, the samples taken were sent to the Institute of Mines and Metallurgy in Bor, which is a partner in this project.

The towns of Moldova Veche, Pojejena, Socol, Coronini and Măcești were visited to take samples from running water and wells and, on this occasion, discussions were held with the locals about the quality of drinking water, pollution in the area and how it affects people's health.

In the Advanced Environmental Research Laboratories of the Western University of Timișoara, microbiological and toxicity determinations were made on the collected samples, respectively, some remedial methods were tested. In carrying out these researches, volunteer students were also involved who have themes for their bachelor's and dissertation papers inspired by the research directions addressed within the project.

The results of the experimental determinations will be used to create a monitoring map of environmental pollution in the New Moldova area, an area polluted by the dust that rises from the Boșneag-Tăușani settling pond, especially during the period of the year when the Coșava wind blows strongly. Site monitoring can provide us with information on the effectiveness of site greening measures.
