A new innovative program proposed by UVT: university master's studies with the specialization "Cybersecurity"

The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics within the Western University of Timișoara is launching a new master's degree program, taught exclusively in English, located in the field Cybersecurity. The program was developed together with one of UVT's strategic partners, the company Eviden, a world leader in areas such as digital, cloud, data, advanced computing and security, with deep expertise in all industries, in over 53 countries.

The Rector of UVT, Marilen Gabriel Pirtea"We are facing new challenges, in the digitally connected society and in the new conditions of the globalized world, with an open conflict right on the edge of Europe. The university master's degree programs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics are at the vanguard of knowledge in this dynamic and challenging world. Through advanced master's studies in the leading field focused on cybersecurity, we align ourselves with the concerns of the most important European university centers, where students are prepared to meet the new demands of the professions of the future. Together with Eviden, a company that gives a strategic importance to the field of cyber security, we have established a partnership for the future, through which we will develop a high-performance laboratory for testing specialized applications in cybersecurity, where future specialists who are in intense demand by international companies in the region will be trained ours and from anywhere, at the European level."

Diana Sipos, Eviden Country Manager: "We are happy to be part of this new master's study program in the field of cyber security, together with the Western University of Timișoara. We live in a constantly changing world and cyber security is more than a technical necessity, it is a social responsibility and a source of innovation. Through our involvement in this project, we want to contribute to the development of skills and knowledge in this field, support quality research and education, and stimulate the creation of an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of cyber security. We are confident that this program will benefit both the students and our company, who will have access to state-of-the-art talent and resources.

I congratulate the team of teachers from the West University of Timișoara, but also our colleagues who are involved in this program. I am sure that this is only the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting collaboration between us and our partners in the field of cyber security.”

The "Cybersecurity" master's university study program is developed following the experience of the last years, when, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, the previous program, that of "Cybernetic Security" (in Romanian), was supported.

The preparation of this program took about a year and a half. Specialists from the university, together with the Eviden company, have identified three areas of interest that have come to life this year: Cloud Security (infrastructure security associated with cloud computing), DevSecOps (programming security in development and operations) and Pentest (systems resistance testing) in the face of simulated authorized cyber attacks). The Western University of Timișoara managed to introduce them into the curricula and the Eviden experts used a rotating model, whereby, once every 2-3 weeks, each Eviden expert teaches a course and supports the laboratory activities with the master's students.

The new Master's program in English aims to achieve the transfer and integration of generic notions of cyber security, contributing to the familiarization of master's students with the fundamental concepts that define security in the information environment, such as those of malware, cyber attacks, "zero-day" exploitation, And so on Afterwards, the knowledge set is continued with the exposition of the management of cyber threats associated with the most common areas of the IT market, where cyber security has a major impact not only from a financial point of view, but also from the point of view of the associated infrastructure: in the private environment, in virtualized/cloud environments, respectively in the academic environment.

In order to continuously adapt to the needs and fluctuations of the labor market, but also to offer specialized study niches in the field of cyber security, the Western University of Timișoara concluded a strategic partnership with the company Eviden, which is to be realized in a first joint project - the laboratory of Cybersecurity technologies and applications.

In addition, as part of the strategy for the permanent development of higher education in the field of cyber security, the Western University of Timișoara concluded a collaboration agreement with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in the USA, through which it aims to improve and diversify the curricula studied, to promote student exchanges, to provide additional specialization options to those involved in this field, but also to contribute to the research activity in the field of cybersecurity.
