The Western University of Timișoara launched the project on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 "Modernization of the computing and storage infrastructure of the Informatics Research Center of the Western University of Timișoara for the provision of Cloud services and high-performance computing services - MOISE” (COD POC/398/1.1.2 (Cloud type)-1a, MYSMIS: 124562).

They participated in the project launch conference, directly (the conference amphitheater within the UVT) or watching the event broadcast online (via GMeet), over 50 of people interested in the applicability of high-performance computing services at the level of scientific research activities and beyond.

The project implemented by UVT will have the general objective of strengthening UVT's presence on the European high-performance computing (HPC) map, in the context in which the European Commission recently announced that it wants to allocate additional financial resources so that the EU can maintain its leading role in this domain.

The rector of the Western University of Timișoara, prof. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, Ph.D., emphasizes the ever-increasing role that advanced technologies have in contemporary educational architecture: "Almost 10 years ago, at the Western University of Timișoara, the most powerful computing equipment in Romania at that time was installed, the IBM BlueGene/P supercomputer, with a computing power that exceeded the power offered by a thousand ordinary computers , with which the High Performance Computing Laboratory of the Institute for Advanced Environmental Research (ICAM), financed by structural funds, was equipped. Now, here we are in front of an up-grade stage in the computing and storage infrastructure of the Informatics Research Center of the Western University of Timișoara, to offer Cloud services and high-performance computing services, through which the community our academic integrates into the European trend that aims to achieve the leading role in the field of high performance computing (HPC). At the end of this ambitious project, UVT will again be on the European map of the most advanced technological equipment, so necessary for the new type of university education, applied more and more through digital methods and online media. The MOISE project is co-financed from the Competitiveness Operational Program 2014-2020 within the call for projects no. 398/1/1, Action 1.1.2. - The development of networks of CD centers, coordinated at national level and connected to European and international profile networks and ensuring researchers' access to scientific publications and European and international databases, in accordance with the financing contract no. 240/24.04.2020.

Implemented in the West Region, it has a duration of 24 months, to be completed on 30.06.2022. The total value of the financing contract is 5.695.580,54 lei, of which 4.851.360,61 lei is non-refundable financing.

The general objective of the project is to increase the capacity, in order to raise the level of international competitiveness of the Western University of Timișoara, by modernizing the existing computing and storage infrastructure in the Informatics Research Center (CeRiCS) within the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, for to enable the increase in the offer of Cloud services, HPC services and integration into international Cloud structures and Massive Data Infrastructures.

Project activities include:

• Purchase, installation and commissioning of equipment;
• Adaptation of Cloud services, BigData and high performance data services;
• Development of a software application for (semi)automatic configuration of a virtualization solution;
• Scientific dissemination;

By implementing the project, the following results will be obtained:

• Increasing the number of applications for accessing grants / projects with European and national funding;
• Increasing the number of partners / beneficiaries who will access the computing infrastructure and related services; 
• Increasing the involvement of young people (students, PhD students, young teaching staff) in research activity;
• Strengthening the participation of CeRiCS and UVT in Research Networks and Research Infrastructures at the European level;
• Increasing the visibility of CeRiCS, the Department of Informatics, the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics and UVT at the international level.
