The launch of UNITA: the beginning of the open, inclusive and efficient European university

The Western University of Timișoara is at the forefront of universities in Europe that have taken care to establish university networks of academic partners, becoming a member of the UNITA European alliance, which includes six universities from five countries. In July 2020, UNITA was selected by the European Commission, in the second call for proposals, to finance the assumed development project.

Along with "Università degli studi di Torino", "Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour", "Université Savoie Mont Blanc", "Universidad de Zaragoza" and "Universidade Beira Interior", UVT is part of the Consortium whose communities totals over 165 students, from various European countries speaking Romance languages (Italy, France, Spain, Romania and Portugal), and who operate in similar geographical, cultural and socio-economic ecosystems.

After the UNITA project was selected by the European Commission for funding in July 2020, on November 6, the UNITA European University started its activities through an online ceremony to launch the "UNITA – Universitas Montium" project.

At the event broadcast on www.unito.it/media both Mr. Themis Christophidou, from the European Commission, and the rectors of the six universities participated: Stefano Geuna – Universita degli Studi di Torino, Denis Varaschin – Université Savoie-Mont Blanc, Mohamed Amara – Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour , José Antonio Mayoral – Universidad de Zaragoza, Marilen Gabriel Pirtea – West University of Timisoara and Antonio Fidalgo – Universidade da Beira Interior.

Through its long-term strategy and its mission, UNITA's main objectives are the creation of a participatory, open, inclusive and efficient European university, aiming at the development of an excellent education based on research and centered on students, the creation of a learning environment that inspires personal and professional development, the promotion of linguistic diversity in Europe, the development of non-central/mountainous regions as a component part of the European community, as well as the development of physical and virtual mobilities for the entire academic community of the consortium (including through "rural Erasmus" and " green mobilities").

All this will be done in a European inter-university campus, digitized and connected to the socio-economic ecosystems of the regions and territories represented. In the pilot phase of UNITA's approach, i.e. in the first three years, the areas on which the alliance's efforts will be focused in order to achieve the established objectives are: Renewable Energies, Circular Economy and Cultural Heritage. The UNITA university alliance has over 50 associated partners, higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations, public and private companies, local and regional government institutions, which turns UNITA into a model of good practices for the future of European education connected to the economic, social environment and cultural (UNITA video: https://youtu.be/sRuU-QR8gLo).
