 Academic Metaranking 2020

The Western University of Timișoara maintains its position in the University Metaranking 2020 edition, managing to rank fourth nationally, with a score of 12 points, obtained following the evaluation process (with 2 additional points compared to the 2019 edition ).

The University Metaranking includes in the analysis 97 active universities in Romania (54 public and 43 private), of which only 28 (all public) were assessed as having international visibility and presence.

Similar to previous editions, the evaluation of universities through this Metaranking consisted in identifying Romanian universities with international visibility (present in at least one ranking included in the analysis) and whose activity generated impact in the international academic area.

The nominated Romanian universities registered a total score of 163 points, being included in the analysis only those universities that have at least one presence in one of the nine international rankings according to the University Metaranking 2020 methodology. As a result of the evaluation process, the universities of the University Consortium obtained 69 points out of a maximum total of 163 points (42,33% of the total score).

The presence of Timisoara higher education is highlighted in this Metaranking by the inclusion of three universities that accumulated over 11% of the total score.

The rector of UVT, university professor Dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, notes the importance of these metaranking results: "In recent years, I have insisted on an idea resulting from all academic studies, namely the fact that the Timisoara university center contributes with results and international visibility, in the general context of Romanian higher education, at a much higher level compared to the level of annual public funding of which Timisoara universities benefit from year after year. UVT, especially, has an advanced contribution to obtaining these results, 12 of the 18 evaluation points from the University Metaranking 2020 being brought to our university center by the Western University of Timișoara. It validates, once again, the fact that the value and academic excellence of Timișoara, which have also been confirmed by the University Metaranking 2020, are insufficiently supported by the public budgets that the MEC allocates to deserving universities here".

According to the methodology used, for the University Metaranking 2020, the results and performances of universities obtained in the following international academic rankings of universities were taken into account: Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU); Center for World University Rankings (CWUR); Leiden Ranking (CWTS); Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers of World Universities (NTU); QS World University Rankings (QS); SCImago Institutions Rankings (SCImago); Times Higher Education (THE) World Universities Ranking; University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP); Best Global Universities by US News (USN), Round University Ranking (RUR) and The Three University Missions (MosIUR).

The University Metaranking 2020 uses the methodology proposed by the members of the High Level Experts Group, appointed in 2016 by the Minister of National Education and Scientific Research, ensuring continuity of the original vision, being developed and published with the support of the Ad Astra Association of Romanian Researchers. All the analyzes presented are based on the data available on the websites of the international university rankings as of November 1, 2020.

The Western University of Timișoara is present in four of the fields classified in the Round University Subject Rankings 2020 (published so far): Natural Sciences, Technical Sciences, Life Sciences and Medical Sciences.

In the published top for the field Natural sciences, UVT achieved the best position for the Research Rank dimension, for which it occupies the second position at the national level (worldwide it occupies the position 390 out of 711 universities in this field).

The rector of UVT, university professor dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, states about the new situation obtained by UVT in this international academic ranking: "The Western University of Timișoara is among the world's university elite by ranking in the RUR2020 ranking, a confirmation that comes from the interpretation of our evolution from one year to the next regarding the four main dimensions considered essential for a university eco-system: teaching, research , international diversity and financial sustainability. It is a new assessment that confirms the quality of the educational and research programs in UVT, which can only motivate us, once more, to set high goals for the coming years".

The Round University Subject Rankings is based on the information used to generate the general Round University Ranking and measures the performance of universities based on 20 performance indicators grouped into 4 indicator categories: teaching (40%), research (40%), international diversity (10%) and financial sustainability (10%) and 6 fields of study: humanities, life sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences, social sciences and medical sciences.

The world top Round University Ranking, published since 2013 by the RUR Rankings Agency in Moscow, resulted from the analysis of the information provided by the universities by completing the platform of the Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP) study developed by Clarivate Analytics, of the bibliometric / scientometric data extracted from the databases of Web of Science Core Collection data, Scopus, Google Scholar, etc., but also through the interpretation of the academic reputation study carried out through the Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP).

In this classification, together with the West University of Timișoara, Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca and the University of Bucharest are present in the University Consortium.
