LIT students in European terminology project: "Women's Rights & Other Issues" section

Gender studies research involves analyzing the discourses, norms and practices that naturalize and even institutionalize gender-based discrimination. One of the concerns of the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (CISG) within UVT is the awareness of students in relation to gender issues and their involvement in activities that contribute to the elimination of these discriminations. In this context, lect. university Dr. Andreea Șerban from the English Language and Literature Collective, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of UVT and CISG member, responded to the call launched by Terminology without Borders, a collaboration between the terminology department of the European Parliament, TERM COORD, and the General Directorate for Translations of the European Union, DG TRAD, regarding the development of a terminological research project in the field "Women's Rights and Other Issues" ("Women's Rights and Other Matters"). Thus, during April-May 2021, lect. university Dr. Andreea Șerban coordinated five students of the Applied Modern Languages specialization from the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology, who were in specialized practice within the CISG. The students defined and translated from English into Romanian more than 80 terms in the field of gender studies and women's rights, which will be included in the European IATE glossary.

In the first phase, the students were trained on how to work and how to comply with the requirements of the TERM COORD department, so that the activity carried out was in accordance with quality and uniform standards, especially with regard to the format of terminological tables. The following phases of the project focused on term research activities, translation, definition and framing in relevant and documented context. The working languages were Romanian and English.

"This project piqued my interest from the very beginning, when I found out what its subject would be. So although there were some challenges in completing the project, I was able to complete my work with the same interest and enthusiasm with which I started. It was an experience from which I learned a lot of new terms and how to search for information in the most efficient way." Anca V. Balc

"Participating in this project was a pleasant experience, extremely interesting, but sometimes difficult. Despite the difficulties encountered, my participation in this project contributed to enriching my knowledge both in the field of feminism and in the field of translation, thanks to the specific terms encountered in the English and Romanian languages." Adelina C. Botyan

"I believe that my involvement in this project brought me various benefits, knowledge and opened my horizon of thinking. Now, for my part, I can appreciate the woman more and want to defend her. Despite the vicissitudes encountered, I managed to mobilize and show commitment and adaptability. I learned to use dictionaries correctly and use the Excel application.” Roberto A. Busoi

"It was a unique, interesting and pleasant experience for me. I am glad that I was able to participate in this project, because the subject aroused my curiosity from the very beginning. Throughout the project I encountered difficulties, which only helped me to enrich my knowledge about the field of feminism, but also about the work of a translator and terminologist, thanks to the specific terms encountered. However, I was able to overcome the obstacles and complete the work successfully." Emanuela M. Velciov

"Following this project, I have a better understanding of the feminist movement and what, unfortunately, far too many women face. I believe that feminism is a topic that should be given more attention so that everyone understands gender differences. I paid a lot of attention to the project, primarily because of its theme. Through his prism I had the opportunity to come into contact with terms specific to this movement." Ada Cîmpeanu

"Participating in this terminology project helped the students to practice their work as terminologists and translators, to develop necessary skills in these two possible careers and, last but not least, to become more aware of various aspects of the feminist movement and violence against women." Andreea Şerban
