UVT innovates in education: SCOUT Mini Pro robots, for Computer Vision and Machine Learning projects

The Western University of Timișoara is a promoter of innovation, constantly investing resources in new technologies, for the integration of scientific discoveries in the education and research process. Among the major concerns that UVT is developing is the provision of programmable installations and systems, useful for the laboratory projects of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. After a previous purchase, the Pepper Robot, this year the endowment with robotics for university activities in UVT is completed by purchasing two SCOUT Mini Pro robots equipped with Nvidia AGX Xavier processor, with an Intel RealSense D435 camera and a VLP-16 lidar. They will play an important role in the testing and development of algorithms and software solutions in the field of Computer Vision and Machine Learning, of wide interest both for research and for the IT production sector. The applications will be developed primarily within the new master's study program "Intelligent software robotics".

The plan of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics in UVT is even more extensive, an entire Embedded and Robotics Laboratory will be equipped, in which collaboration formulas between researchers and students from several faculties of UVT would be perfectly conceivable, for example by at the Faculty of Arts and Design, who, together with FMI researchers and students, learn and integrate new ideas and solutions as best as possible, within specific projects. All these hands-on projects can be done both within the existing undergraduate programs and within the new master's field "Intelligent software robotics", which will be offered starting this summer. Within this master's study program, it will be possible to obtain specific skills, through applied research activities in the field of Informatics, specialized in automation, software robots, neurotechnologies, artificial intelligence or signal processing in general.

Competences obtained through the new master's study program "Intelligent software robotics" will allow graduates to access specific doctoral study areas or to carry out advanced activities in software development departments in the field of IT equipment production.

Robots integrate programming on embedded devices, an activity that is becoming increasingly attractive, fun and interesting for young people. Robotics appeals to pupils and students who do not necessarily have a background in computer science and mathematics, but who can contribute ideas to solve a real-world problem (which can be, for example, learning the surrounding terrain, detecting and avoiding obstacles , scanning and building a virtual city, tracking the evolution of a building / monument / tree, or anomaly detection). The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics from UVT offers students ambitious projects in this very attractive field of robotics, in which software and hardware components purchased from own funds or from various didactic or research projects are brought, intended to develop robotics knowledge through practical applications .
