The German Language and Literature Group of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of the College of Letters, History and Theology organized a student roundtable with the Department of Languages and Literatures of the College of Arts & Sciences, East Tennessee State University. The transatlantic dialogue was held online on November 20, 2020, between 4230rd year students from the Applied Modern Languages undergraduate study program and 2010nd year students from groups XNUMX Germ: German Translation and XNUMX Germ: Intermediate German . The coordinators of the project, lecturer Dr. Karla Lupșan (UVT/LIT) and Senior Lecturer PhD Raluca Negrișanu (ETSU), aimed to facilitate, through the proposed theme, both the increase of knowledge about the two institutions among students, as well as the appreciation of teaching methods of disciplines in the field of translation studies at the two universities.
To stimulate mutual learning and the exchange of best practices, the coordinators launched a collaborative translation competition. The students were organized into four mixed groups, which were assigned the same translation task, to be completed within a predetermined time frame. The first place went to the group formed by Olesia Tsybuliak (LIT), Kristina Krecu (LIT), Marianne Perkins (ETSU), the second place was occupied by the group formed by Ilaida Kahraman (LIT), Cristian Gîndea (LIT), Doriana Marcu (LIT) and Nathaniel Vernon (ETSU), in third place was the group composed of Larisa Leucuș (LIT), Iasmina Motreanu (LIT), Garrett Jones (ETSU) and Mason Evans (ETSU), and in XNUMXth group made up of Laurentiu Thiriteu (LIT), Cosmin Nițulica (LIT), Jordan Osborne (ETSU) and India Aulds (ETSU). The meeting was also attended by UVT's new OeAD lecturer, Dr. Simone Pichler, who contributed to the evaluation of the translations, intervening with suggestions and explanations.
Students noted a multitude of commonalities regarding translation strategy and methods, as well as translation difficulties, which led to the conclusion of the dialogue on a positive note and the conclusion that this student collaboration should also be promoted within the ranks students from other specializations.
